CULTURAL OCCUPATIONS BY SEX AND AGE

OVERVIEW

According to the 2011 Census, of all persons employed in cultural occupations nationally, 1% (2,882) resided in the Northern Territory. This was 3% of all employed persons in the Northern Territory.

The largest employing cultural occupations were park rangers (490), painter (visual arts) (168) and minister of religion (135).

EMPLOYMENT BY SEX

Of persons employed in cultural occupations in the Northern Territory, 1,458 (51%) were male and 1,422 (49%) were female. There were also more males than females employed in cultural occupations nationally.

The cultural occupations employing more than 50 persons with the largest proportions of males were park ranger (76%) and minister of religion (72%). The cultural occupations with the largest proportions of females were librarian (88%) and painter (visual arts) (72%). Graphic designer was the most gender neutral cultural occupation in the Northern Territory, with six percentage points separating the sexes.

EMPLOYMENT BY AGE

Persons aged 15 to 24 years made up 11% of persons employed in cultural occupations in the Northern Territory, which was similar to the national average. Of persons employed in cultural occupations in the Northern Territory, 13% in arts occupations, 12% in heritage occupations and 4% in other cultural occupations were aged 15 to 24 years.

The cultural occupation employing the most persons aged 15 to 24 years was park ranger (80).

The cultural occupation with the largest number of employed persons aged 55 years and over in the Northern Territory was minister of religion (50). Of cultural occupations employing 50 or more persons, the largest proportions aged 55 years and over were minister of religion (38%) and library technician (35%). Only 6% of park rangers and 3% of graphic designers were aged 55 years and over.
